In the next stage, they defeated FC Cascavel, from Paraná, winning the away leg 1–0 and then thrashing them 3–0 at home. In the round of 16, they faced Ceilândia from the Federal District. After a 1–1 draw away, the Fishermen advanced again with a 1–0 home win.
The quarterfinals were decisive, as they secured promotion to Série C. Their opponent was Cianorte, with a 0–0 draw away and another 1–0 victory at Arena Barra FC. Already promoted, they played freely in the semifinals, beating Inter de Limeira 2–0 at home and winning again away, 3–2, reaching the Série D final.
Santa Cruz in the 2025 Série D
Historic and traditional, Santa Cruz is experiencing a low period that brought them down to the national fourth division. In this year’s Série D, the “Tricolor” started well in the group stage, collecting 27 points from eight wins, three draws, and three losses, finishing second in the group on tiebreakers.
In the second stage, they needed penalties to advance. They faced Sergipe, losing 2–1 at Batistão but reversing the score at Arena Pernambuco to force penalties, which they won 5–4.
The round of 16 also required a shootout. Santa Cruz drew 1–1 at home against Altos, then 0–0 away, but prevailed 3–1 on penalties.
With promotion on the line, they faced América-RN. A 1–0 win in the first leg allowed a 1–1 draw at Arena das Dunas to be enough to secure a spot in Série C. In the semifinals, playing the first leg away for the first time, they beat Maranhão 1–0 and then held a scoreless draw at home to qualify for the final.
This will be Santa Cruz’s second Série D final, after also reaching it in 2011, when they finished runners-up to Tupi from Minas Gerais.
