What is the Mexican Grand Prix like?
The Mexican Grand Prix takes place at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City and debuted in 1963. The circuit is 4.304 kilometers long, with 71 laps and 17 turns. It sits over 2,000 meters above sea level, which affects both car performance and driver endurance. In total, the race covers 305.584 kilometers.
It was there, in 1992, that German driver Michael Schumacher reached the podium for the first time in Formula 1, finishing third. Another notable former F1 driver on this track is Finland’s Valtteri Bottas. In 2021, he set the lap record at 1:17.774. However, the record for most wins at the Mexican GP belongs to an active driver — and one of this weekend’s top favorites.
Dutch driver Max Verstappen, from Red Bull Racing, has won five times at this circuit — in 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2023. In 2024, the trophy went to Carlos Sainz Jr., still driving for Ferrari at the time. Lewis Hamilton won in 2016 and 2019, when he was with Mercedes.
Hamilton, however, is not in great form. The British driver has gone 19 races without a podium finish — the longest streak for a Ferrari driver. On the other hand, Hamilton became the first driver in Formula 1 history to reach 5,000 career points.
Who is competing in the 2025 Mexican GP?
The 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix features all the teams and drivers familiar to Formula 1 fans this season. McLaren fields Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Mercedes has George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, while Ferrari runs Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda represent Red Bull Racing, and Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz drive for Williams. Racing Bulls feature Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar. Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso compete for Aston Martin. Kick Sauber has Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto and veteran Nico Hülkenberg.
For Haas F1 Team, Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman are behind the wheel. Finally, Alpine’s lineup includes Pierre Gasly and Argentine driver Franco Colapinto.
How is the 2025 Formula 1 season going?
So far, 19 races have been completed in the 2025 Formula 1 season. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri has won seven races and leads the standings with 346 points. His teammate Lando Norris has five wins and is second with 332 points.
Verstappen, from Red Bull Racing, also has five victories — including three of the last four races — and sits third with 306 points. The only other driver to win this season is George Russell, who has two victories and 252 points.
The Dutchman has significantly narrowed the gap to the Australian. To claim his fifth Formula 1 championship, Verstappen needs to outscore his rival by at least eight points per race.
Among the constructors, McLaren has already clinched the title since the Singapore GP. The team leads comfortably with 678 points. The battle is now for second place: Mercedes has 341 points, followed by Ferrari with 334. Red Bull Racing is close behind with 331, while Williams rounds out the triple-digit teams with 111 points.
Which Grands Prix have taken place so far?
The 2025 Formula 1 season began with the Australian Grand Prix. Then, it moved to Asia for the races in China, Japan, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. The championship crossed the Atlantic for the Miami Grand Prix before returning to Europe for the Emilia Romagna GP.
Still in Europe, the season continued with the Monaco and Spanish Grands Prix. Then came the Canadian Grand Prix in North America. The tour returned to Europe again for the Austrian, British, Belgian, Hungarian, Dutch, and Italian GPs.
The most recent races were held in Azerbaijan, Singapore, and the United States. After this weekend’s Mexican GP, there will be four more races to close out the season: São Paulo (Interlagos), Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi.
Who are the favorites to win the 2025 Mexican Grand Prix?
After winning three of the last four races, Max Verstappen is charging up the standings and is the favorite to win the Mexican GP, with odds of 2.1. He is followed by Lando Norris at 3.2 and current leader Oscar Piastri at 4.3.
George Russell, who broke Verstappen’s streak with his Mercedes, is further down at 13.0, tied with Charles Leclerc. Lewis Hamilton, Leclerc’s Ferrari teammate, is listed at 23.0.
Among constructors, McLaren leads the betting with odds of 1.9, having already secured the championship. Red Bull, with Verstappen and Tsunoda, follows closely at 2.05. Ferrari and Mercedes are far behind, at 10.0 and 11.0 respectively.
