Before the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit welcomes the best drivers and teams, with engines roaring through the streets of Montreal, we’ve prepared this guide with everything you need to know about the 10th race of the F1 2025 season!
What is the Canadian GP like in F1 2025?
Part of Formula 1 since 1978, the race was originally held on Notre Dame Island and renamed in 1982 in honor of legendary Canadian driver Gilles Villeneuve, who won the inaugural event.
The 4.361 km track has 14 turns and long straights followed by heavy braking zones, quickly becoming a fan favorite. It’s a true test of brake endurance and offers plenty of overtaking opportunities — especially at the infamous “Wall of Champions,” a treacherous corner that has claimed big names like Schumacher, Villeneuve, and Damon Hill.
Despite being set in an urban environment, the track blends the feel of a street circuit with features of a permanent racetrack, and Canada’s unpredictable weather adds another layer of excitement.
Over the years, the Canadian GP has delivered it all: photo finishes, last-minute mechanical failures, and even the longest F1 race in history — in 2011, Jenson Button won after 4 hours and 4 minutes of chaos, rain, and red flags.
Lewis Hamilton is the most successful driver in Montreal, with seven wins — tied with Schumacher. Max Verstappen enters 2025 aiming to extend his recent dominance, having won the last three editions (2022, 2023, and 2024).
Known for its scenic, tree-lined setting and exciting racing, the Canadian GP remains a must-watch on the Formula 1 calendar.
Which Teams and Drivers Are Competing in the 2025 Canadian GP?
The season is already halfway to the European summer, and now it’s Montreal’s turn to host Formula 1 with the classic Canadian GP at Gilles Villeneuve. The competition is fierce, and most teams are sticking to their driver pairings (well, almost).
Red Bull fields Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda — a duo delivering consistent results. Ferrari bets on the experience of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, while Mercedes continues its new chapter with rookie Kimi Antonelli alongside George Russell.
McLaren’s pairing of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri is one of the most consistent this year. Williams has surprised many with Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, and Haas brings a mix of youth and experience with Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon.
Sauber continues the debut season of Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, paired with Nico Hülkenberg. Alpine lines up with Pierre Gasly and newcomer Franco Colapinto, while Racing Bulls rely on one of the youngest pairings on the grid: Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar.
At Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso remains the only confirmed driver so far, but that hasn’t stopped the team from fighting in the midfield and consistently scoring points.
How Is the 2025 F1 Season Going?
McLaren is the dominant team in the first third of the 2025 Formula 1 season. Oscar Piastri leads the championship with 186 points and five wins in nine races. The Australian has reached the podium in every round so far and looks like the man to beat.
Hot on his heels is teammate Lando Norris, with 176 points, two wins, and eight podiums. Together, they’ve put McLaren at the top of the Constructors’ standings, well ahead of Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari.
Max Verstappen is the only non-McLaren driver to win a race this year — in Japan and Imola — but he trails Piastri by 49 points, with a total of 137. The three-time world champion has struggled with inconsistency and was handed a 10-second penalty for a collision with Russell in Spain.
George Russell sits in fourth with 111 points and a steadily improving Mercedes. Charles Leclerc is fifth with 94 points and three podiums for Ferrari. Further back is Lewis Hamilton in sixth, still adapting to Ferrari, with 71 points and no podiums yet.
Among the rookies, Kimi Antonelli has scored 48 points and is starting to shine. Gabriel Bortoleto, Jack Doohan, and others are still chasing their first points.
Which F1 Grands Prix Have Taken Place in 2025 So Far?
The 2025 Formula 1 season has reached its 10th round, and if you haven’t been following, now’s the perfect time to catch up — because it’s been full of surprises, new pairings, and unexpected results at nearly every GP.
The season kicked off in Australia, followed by China, Japan, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the star-studded Miami GP, the classic in Imola, the glitz of Monaco, and the heat of Catalonia in Spain.
Now, it’s Montreal’s turn to take center stage. The Gilles Villeneuve circuit is known for producing thrilling races, and with such a competitive grid this year, expectations are high.
McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari have taken turns on the top step of the podium, while Mercedes is regaining form with Russell and rising star Antonelli. Piastri and Norris are clearly the season’s front-runners, while Verstappen stays close in a more balanced championship than previous years.
In the midfield, Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon are forming a solid duo for Williams. Gabriel Bortoleto hasn’t scored yet with Sauber but is gaining experience. At Aston Martin, Alonso continues to push solo, trying to make it into Q3 whenever possible.
With nine races down, the championship is starting to take shape — but in Montreal, anything can happen. The track punishes mistakes and rewards risk-takers.
Who Are the Favorites for the 2025 Canadian GP?
According to the odds, the 2025 Formula 1 title is headed to Woking — home of McLaren. Oscar Piastri is the heavy favorite, with odds of just 1.6, reflecting his dominance so far this season. He’s been leading with confidence, racking up wins and podiums.
Right behind him is teammate Lando Norris, with odds of 2.7. The Brit seems to have finally found his rhythm and looks set to fight for the title, placing McLaren in a very comfortable spot.
Still in the mix is Max Verstappen, with odds of 8.5. The Red Bull ace has won races this year but is facing more resistance than in previous seasons — the era of dominance may be giving way to a new, more competitive (and more orange) reality.
George Russell and Charles Leclerc are both at 140.0, which suggests they’re still mathematically in the fight but falling behind in practical terms. The same goes for Lewis Hamilton, with odds of 240.0 in his first full season with Ferrari — the seven-time champ is still searching for the right setup.
Further down the odds list are rising stars like Andrea Kimi Antonelli (800.0) and Gabriel Bortoleto (900.0), considered long shots. Veterans like Fernando Alonso, Pierre Gasly, Nico Hülkenberg, and Lance Stroll also sit at 900.0 — all outside the main title conversation.
The title fight is still open, but with Piastri and Norris clearly out front, McLaren seems to be the team to beat in 2025.
