Still, there is a strong desire to end the drought in the country’s main competition. And for football fans, this is yet another opportunity to enjoy sports betting.
Before the ball starts rolling for the club from Rio Grande do Sul, check out Grêmio’s details for the national season, head coach, squad changes and the team’s main odds. All of this is available in this special Blaze guide, warming up for the start of the Brasileirão.
New Brasileirão calendar
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) changed the Brazilian football calendar in 2026, reducing state championship dates, increasing spots in the Copa do Brasil and extending the Brazilian Championship. As a result, the Brasileirão now starts in late January, unlike previous editions that kicked off between March and April.
One of the reasons for the change, which is expected to remain in effect until 2029, is the 2026 World Cup, held between June and July, which pauses major national competitions. As such, Grêmio will make its debut in the 2026 Brazilian Série A on January 28, at 7:30 pm (Brasília time), against Fluminense at the Maracanã.
Grêmio
A two-time Brazilian champion, Grêmio won its last Série A title in 1996. That means the title turns 30 years old this year. The team enters the new season revamped, with departures and new additions to the squad in search of bigger achievements.
The club is still led by Portuguese coach Luís Castro, who arrived in December 2025 for the new season. He replaced Mano Menezes, who managed Grêmio from April to December of last year.
2025 performance
With 13 wins, 10 draws and 15 losses in last year’s Brasileirão, Grêmio finished the competition in 9th place. The team collected 49 points and secured one of the spots in the group stage of the 2026 Copa Sudamericana.

Squad
Sixteen players left Grêmio following the change in the club’s management. Most of the departures, however, involved backup players, including contract terminations, loans and sales. The only two regular starters to leave were goalkeeper Tiago Volpi and forward Alysson.
The latter was sold to English football, where he will compete in the Premier League with Aston Villa. The deal exceeded R$ 65 million. There is also the possibility of further changes early in the season.
Most of the starting lineup remains at Grêmio, such as center-back and captain Walter Kannemann, left-back Marlon and midfielder Arthur. New arrivals in 2026 include left-back Caio Paulista on loan from Palmeiras, forward Tetê returning after a few seasons in Europe, Colombian forward José Enamorado and goalkeeper Weverton.

With odds of 50.0 to win the title before the start of the Brasileirão, Grêmio is expected to remain in the middle of the table once again. When excluding Flamengo, the main favorite, the Tricolor Gaúcho’s chances improve slightly, dropping to 25.0.
