La Liga 2025/26 Guide: Favorites, Expectations, and Top Stars!

Check out the complete overview of Spain’s top football league.

Spain is the country with the most European titles, and it’s no wonder that its championship is one of the most anticipated of the season. This Friday, August 15, Girona and Rayo Vallecano will kick off La Liga 2025/26 — and you can get excited and, of course, place your Sports Bets.

This tournament is much more than the reigning champions Barcelona and the powerhouse Real Madrid, mainly challenged by Atlético de Madrid. Or Valencia and Sevilla, both in crisis and battling in the lower half of the table, watching their rivals from afar. With eight representatives in UEFA tournaments, the Spanish Championship also features the return of Leganés, Elche, and Real Oviedo — all promoted to the top tier.

And if you want to make the most of the new La Liga season, don’t worry: we’ve prepared this complete guide to every team in the competition. Ready to plan your bets responsibly?

About La Liga 2025/26

First contested in 1929 and won by Barcelona, the Spanish Championship will hold its 97th edition this season. Starting on Friday, August 15, the tournament will end on May 24, 2026, featuring 20 teams — playing two rounds and a total of 38 matchdays.

The team with the most points will be champion and, in case of a tie in points, head-to-head results will determine the higher position. If further tiebreakers are needed, goal difference is considered, followed by goals scored.

Besides the Spanish football crown, La Liga will also decide spots for the three UEFA competitions: the top four will qualify for the next Champions League, fifth and sixth places will go to the Europa League, and seventh place will book a ticket to the Conference League.

On the other end of the table lies the dreaded relegation zone, made up of the bottom three positions. Unlike leagues such as the German Bundesliga, there are no playoffs for survival — only the second division has knockout rounds to fight for a spot in the top tier.

Alavés

Two years after returning to the top tier, Alavés has never won La Liga and is expected to remain far from the upper half of the table. Led by Argentine Eduardo Coudet, the team from Estadio Mendizorroza is still looking to strengthen its squad to avoid struggles and has only made low-investment signings — but has yet to replace top scorer Kike García, who netted 13 goals last season.

Key Departures

Joaquín Panichelli (Center Forward)

Santiago Mouriño (Center Back)

Tomás Conechny (Left Winger)

Kike García (Center Forward)

Key Players

With a well-defined style under Coudet, the Babazorros rely on defensive solidity and tactical organization to stay competitive. Facundo Garcés has been the backbone of the defense since his arrival in the last winter transfer window, while Spaniard Antonio Blanco brings balance to the midfield. The departure of striker Kike García could be a major blow to the attack, which is still searching for reinforcements.

Expectations

Since returning to the top tier two years ago, Alavés has been stuck in the lower half of the table and is unlikely to climb much higher in 2025/26 — needing to be careful not to drop back to the second division. With relegation odds of 3.5, they are the fifth-most likely team to go down and could be in trouble if they don’t stay alert.

Athletic Bilbao

Fourth place last season, Athletic Bilbao is one of Spain’s strongest teams and arrives motivated after winning the Copa del Rey. The Lions had a stable campaign and are expected to once again fight to remain among the top sides — and keeping their key players, especially the highly sought-after Nico Williams, suggests they can do it.

Key Players

Ever thought about playing professionally alongside your brother? The Williams brothers shine for Athletic Bilbao, with midfielder Iñaki and forward Nico contributing to 14 and 10 goals respectively — and the offensive jewel scored in the Copa del Rey final, sealing the title. Academy product Unai Simón has been in the first team for ten years and offers security between the posts, with 11 clean sheets last season.

Expectations

With the best defense in La Liga last season and strong home support at San Mamés — where no team outside the big three has won in the last two seasons — Athletic enters the competition with a real chance of securing another top-four finish. With title odds of 50, the Lions are a respected dark horse, capable of surprising if they maintain defensive consistency and improve their attacking efficiency.

Atlético de Madrid

Despite showing flashes of excitement at times, Atlético de Madrid failed to compete for the national title. Diego Simeone will begin his 14th year in charge of the Colchoneros and has already invested more than €175 million in reinforcements, aiming to finally reclaim the La Liga crown.

Rodrigo de Paul (Defensive Midfielder)

Key Players

Signed from Manchester City, forward Julián Álvarez stood out in his first season in Madrid with 17 goals — sharing the spotlight with the experienced Antoine Griezmann, the team’s assist leader. The arrival of midfielder Johnny Cardoso is seen positively as a replacement for Rodrigo de Paul, while goalkeeper Jan Oblak remains an essential figure to lead the team toward the top.

Expectations

Fighting for the title may seem like an unlikely dream, but Atlético de Madrid has already proven capable of toppling Real Madrid and Barcelona. They are priced at 1.35 to be the best team outside the big two, and 9.0 to win the title. If the new signings click, ending the five-year title drought is not out of the question.

Barcelona

Just four points separated Barcelona from Real Madrid, securing the Blaugrana’s 28th league title. Coach Hansi Flick remains at the helm and, despite a quiet transfer market so far, has kept the core of the championship-winning squad. Additions such as goalkeeper Joan García and left winger Marcus Rashford bolster the team as they aim to stay on top.

Key Players

Starting his second season at Camp Nou, Hansi Flick blends La Masia’s youth with established stars. At 18, forward Lamine Yamal is a prodigy who inherited the iconic number 10 shirt worn by Messi and Ronaldinho, joining Raphinha to lead the attack. In midfield, Pedri and Gavi bring dynamism and technique, while the goalkeeper position is up for grabs: Wojciech Szczęsny arrived in good form and will compete with Joan García, though Ter Stegen is returning from injury.

Expectations

It’s hardly surprising to say this: Barcelona will almost certainly be in the title race. Their odds of 2.05 are just behind Real Madrid’s 1.85, showing balance between the rivals. Despite being in cost-control mode, retaining the championship-winning squad is a strong sign — especially for those who believe you shouldn’t change a winning team.

Celta de Vigo

Qualified for the Europa League thanks to an additional spot awarded to La Liga, Celta de Vigo starts the season aiming higher. Claudio Giráldez remains in charge and will have his first preseason at Balaídos. Still seeking reinforcements, they have brought in left winger Bryan Zaragoza from Bayern Munich on loan without spending heavily.

Key Players

Balancing experience and speed, Celta relies on 38-year-old Iago Aspas as their main technical leader — though he’ll have competition from Borja Iglesias, returning from loan. Midfielder Óscar Mingueza remains a key figure for dictating play, while experienced left back Marcos Alonso poses an attacking threat with goals and assists.

Expectations

Having never won La Liga, Celta is unlikely to break the drought this year: their odds stand at 250.0, with seven other teams having better chances. The realistic goal is to secure another UEFA competition spot.

Elche

Back in the top tier after three years, Elche finished just two points shy of winning the second division. With a modest budget, Eder Sarabia’s team is sticking with most of the promotion-winning squad while needing to overcome the departure of midfielder Nicolás Fernández, sold to New York City. All signs point to the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero hosting a challenging season with one clear objective: survival.

Key Players

Recently promoted, Elche relies on players from the promotion campaign and low-cost signings. In midfield, Rodri Mendoza is the chief playmaker, with vision and distribution skills, while Aleix Febas adds dynamism and intensity. The defense is strengthened by the signing of David Affengruber, expected to take on a leadership role.

Expectations

Returning to the top flight after three years, Elche is unlikely to have a smooth season and will likely fight relegation until the end. With relegation odds of 2.0 — second only to Real Oviedo — Eder Sarabia will have to work hard to keep the modest club from going back down.

Espanyol

In their return to the top tier, Espanyol finished just two points above the relegation zone. The Blanquiazules lost goalkeeper Joan García to Barcelona and have so far invested in low-cost reinforcements. Managed by Manolo González, the team will start the season with modest expectations.

Key Players

Looking to avoid another relegation scare, Espanyol is trying to build a balanced and solid squad. Captain Javi Puado renewed his contract until 2030 and remains the main offensive reference, scoring 12 goals last season. The arrival of experienced striker Kike García boosts the attack, while young center back Roger Hinojo impresses with his technique and maturity.

Expectations

After escaping relegation by only two points, Espanyol is set for another tough year ahead. With odds of 3.0 to return to the second division, only three teams are considered more at risk — meaning the fans will need to be patient once again.

Getafe

It was close, but Getafe managed to stay in the top flight with a 13th-place finish last season. Keeping their core squad and adding targeted reinforcements, the Dark Blues aim to face less trouble and remain stable in La Liga — which is the trend.

Key Players

Getafe keeps its experienced core to preserve the strict defensive style that defines the Bordalás era. In midfield, Mauro Arambarri remains the engine, balancing strong marking with attacking runs. The defensive pairing of Omar Alderete and Djené is solid and seasoned. In attack, Borja Mayoral looks to reclaim his starring role, while the signings of Juanmi and Adrián Liso expand attacking options. Young prospect Mario Martín, on loan from Real Madrid, is a bet for the future.

Expectations

After finishing 13th in 2024/25, the goal remains the same: stay in the top flight, this time with less trouble. Seven teams have higher relegation chances, with Getafe’s at 5.0.

Girona

After qualifying for the Champions League with a third-place finish the season before, Girona had a campaign far below expectations: they ended just one point ahead of relegated Leganés. Starting his fifth season at Montilivi, coach Míchel is still seeking reinforcements to strengthen the squad and perhaps return to Europe.

Key Players

Girona maintains a proactive style based on ball possession and quick transitions. Local idol Cristian Stuani remains the main attacking reference, bringing experience and leadership. At the back, young left-back Miguel Gutiérrez stands out for his offensive support and defensive reliability, making him one of the season’s promising talents.

Expectations

Without the need to juggle La Liga and the Champions League, Girona aims for a more comfortable season. Their relegation odds of 5.0 place them level with Getafe and relatively safe. Odds of 4.5 to finish in the top six suggest a chance of returning to UEFA competitions, although nine teams are more likely.

Levante

Four years later, Levante is back in the top flight after winning their third La Liga 2 title. Without the financial clout of more established sides, the Frogs have prioritized low-cost and loan signings such as defenders Allan Matturo and Matías Moreno from Genoa and Fiorentina. It remains to be seen if this will be enough to secure survival.

Dani Martín (Goalkeeper)

Key Players

Back in La Liga as Segunda División champions, Levante is counting on the continuity of its winning core. Pablo Martínez drives the midfield, while Kervin Arriaga brings defensive stability. In attack, young Goduine Koyalipou is the main bet for speed and mobility.

Expectations

The Frogs won’t start the season in a relaxed position, as relegation odds of 2.4 make them the third most threatened side — meaning they are in the drop zone. They will need their collective strength and Calero’s playing style to provide the stability needed to avoid the drop.

Mallorca

Mallorca came close to securing a Conference League spot: just four points separated the Pirates from Rayo Vallecano. Now in their fifth straight year in the top flight, Jagoba Arrasate’s team looks to take the next step and avoid falling just short again. With limited transfer activity, keeping the core squad could be an advantage — if reinforcements like midfielder Pablo Torre and center forward Mateo Joseph deliver.

Key Players

Mallorca’s squad is anchored by figures who define its identity. Center back Martin Valjent, extended until 2029, is a natural leader and key figure with over 220 appearances for the club. Up front, Cyle Larin is the main offensive reference, while goalkeeper Dominik Greif provides security at the back.

Expectations

With little change to the squad, Mallorca dreams of taking the next step and qualifying for a UEFA competition. The bad news is that 12 other teams have a better chance of finishing in the top six, as their 9.0 odds are not particularly favorable. At least relegation doesn’t seem likely, with odds of 5.5 putting 10 teams ahead of them in the risk list.

Osasuna

After drawing with Alavés in the final round, Osasuna lost the Conference League spot due to tiebreaker rules and now aims to move past the disappointment. Now managed by Italian Alessio Lisci, the El Sadar side hasn’t been active in the transfer market and could spend its seventh consecutive year in the top flight worrying about the specter of relegation.

The main offensive reference is Ante Budimir, a consistent goalscorer. In defense, young center-back Flavien Enzo Boyomo stands out for his quality and is already attracting international attention. The arrival of right-back Valentin Rosier is aimed at strengthening the defense and fixing weaknesses.

Expectations

Many departures and few arrivals raise red flags for Osasuna, who may have to fight against relegation. Odds of 4.5 place only five teams at greater risk, meaning the Pamplona side may need to look more toward the bottom than dream of the top.

Rayo Vallecano

Known for its political activism, Rayo Vallecano has consolidated its position in the top flight and was rewarded with a Conference League spot. The goal is to use their best La Liga campaign as motivation to cement their place in the upper half of the table. However, the arrival of more modest reinforcements could be a challenge amid a busier schedule.

Key Players

A cohesive and versatile squad with an emphasis on collective organization. Pedro Díaz has emerged as the midfield orchestrator, and captain Álvaro García is a key figure in attack and leadership. In defense, center-back Abdul Mumin is the technical leader.

Expectations

Despite a strong 2025/26 campaign, the capital side will face the challenge of balancing the domestic league with the Conference League. Prioritizing free transfers, Rayo may encounter difficulties, and relegation is a real possibility: odds of 4.5, with only five teams more threatened.

Real Betis

Despite some inconsistency, Real Betis finished sixth and secured a Europa League spot. The Verdiblancos are still looking to strengthen their squad and, even after a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in the Conference League final, Manuel Pellegrini’s side begins the summer eager to return to the Champions League.

Expectations

Winning the national title after 91 years is unlikely, as the Verdiblancos have odds of 65.0 and are ranked sixth among contenders. The more realistic goal is to fight for a top-four spot, with 4.0 odds and a possible boost if Spain performs well in UEFA competitions this season.

Real Madrid

After a titleless season, Carlo Ancelotti left Real Madrid and was replaced by another club legend: Xabi Alonso, who did an excellent job at Bayer Leverkusen. The overhaul also saw midfielder Luka Modric and versatile Lucas Vázquez depart, with promising talents such as center-back Dean Huijsen and center forward Gonzalo García among the main additions for the most successful club on the planet.

Expectations

As usual, Real Madrid is expected to fight for the title. Odds of 1.75 make the Merengues favorites to claim their 37th La Liga trophy — and the battle with Barcelona promises to be tight.

Real Oviedo

After 25 years away from the Spanish top flight, Real Oviedo came from behind against Mirandés in the playoffs to finally return. Having once dropped as far as the fourth division, the Carbayones are seeking to rebuild — but limited financial resources could hinder their survival hopes, with relegation risk a serious concern.

Expectations

Prospects aren’t bright, as Real Oviedo is the favorite for relegation with odds of 1.85. With a modest squad and limited financial power, Veljko Paunović’s side will likely struggle until the final matchday.

Real Sociedad

Dreaming of winning the Europa League in their biggest rival’s stadium, Real Sociedad disappointed and finished in the bottom half of the table. With a change at the helm, the Basques are betting on coach Sergio Francisco to lead a recovery. However, the team lost midfielder Martín Zubimendi to Arsenal and has been quiet in the transfer market — but depending on how they reinvest the €70 million received for their star, they could achieve positive results.

Real Sociedad continues to rely on a solid and well-connected core, with players who are technical and tactical references. Mikel Oyarzabal remains the main offensive leader, while Takefusa Kubo adds creativity and speed on the right flank. The arrival of Gonçalo Guedes, with experience in major European leagues, promises to raise the level of experience in attack. In defense, Duje Ćaleta-Car offers a physical and reliable option to strengthen the back line.

Expectations

A title is unlikely for Real Sociedad, as their 100.0 odds are far from encouraging. Therefore, the fight is for a spot in international competitions, with 3.0 odds for the Basques to finish in the top six suggesting this is a realistic goal.

Sevilla

Who would have thought that the traditional Sevilla would be the first team above the relegation zone? It’s been three consecutive years in the bottom half of the table, with a drop in performance and struggles to build competitive squads. Argentine Matías Almeyda arrives aiming to guide the Europa League giants toward better days, but the lack of investment in reinforcements is a concern.

Juanlu Sánchez, a youth academy product, is earning a bigger role at right back. Rubén Vargas arrives to be a creative outlet on the flanks. In defense, center-back Loïc Badé is the pillar of consistency, while veterans like Óliver Torres and Suso, despite inconsistent performances, could add depth if they regain their best form.

Expectations

According to the odds, Sevilla should have an easier season: they are ranked 11th among the most threatened teams, with odds of 6.0. Whether the Nervionenses’ rebuild succeeds and their 7.0 odds to secure a UEFA spot materialize remains to be seen.

Valencia

Another giant going through financial difficulties and playing a supporting role, Valencia is betting on the continuity of coach Carlos Corberán to rebuild. However, the lack of investment suggests the Spaniard will have a tough job restoring Los Che’s competitiveness.

Javi Guerra is the midfield orchestrator, offering intensity and technique, while Diego López stands out for his finishing and attacking runs. The experience of Gabriel Paulista and José Gayà is crucial to maintaining balance in the squad.

Expectations

Despite their tradition, Valencia has endured six years of financial struggles and a secondary role. The good news is that a second relegation is unlikely, with 8.0 odds placing Los Che 12th among the most threatened teams. However, returning to international competition after six years seems improbable, as ten other teams are better positioned than their 5.5 odds suggest.

Villarreal

Back in the Champions League, Villarreal starts the season with optimism and strong chances of competing at the top. Marcelino remains in charge of the Yellow Submarine and has overseen an interesting transfer market: despite losing Álex Baena and Thierno Barry, the team brought in players like Thomas Partey and Alberto Moleiro and is still looking for reinforcements — further raising their level and confidence.

Expectations

Although their 50.0 odds make winning their first-ever title unlikely, Villarreal is well-positioned to fight for a Champions League spot: they are the third-best team outside Real Madrid and Barcelona.
