About the 2025 Women’s Copa Libertadores
Although the men’s Libertadores has existed since 1960, the women’s version took 49 years to become reality. CONMEBOL organized the first edition of the Women’s Copa Libertadores in 2009, marking a turning point for the development of the sport in South America.
As women’s football grew in popularity and investment, more major clubs turned their attention to the sport. Starting in 2019, it became mandatory for professional clubs to field women’s teams in order to compete in CONMEBOL tournaments — driving greater inclusion and representation.
Nine clubs have claimed the title so far: Santos, São José, Ferroviária, Corinthians, and Palmeiras have combined for 13 trophies for Brazil, while Colo-Colo, Sportivo Limpeño, and Atlético Huila lifted the trophy for Chile, Paraguay, and Colombia. Just like in the men’s edition, Brazilian dominance has lasted for the past six years.
Unlike the men’s format with home-and-away matches, the tournament is played in neutral venues. Another difference is the duration: instead of being spread out across the entire year, the Women’s Libertadores is played consecutively and without breaks — in 2025, just 16 days.
What changed in the 2025 Women’s Copa Libertadores?
With growing investment in the sport, CONMEBOL increased the prize pool for the 2025 Women’s Libertadores by 40%, totaling US$ 5.25 million to be divided among the 16 participants.
Each club will receive US$ 50,000 just for participating, plus an additional US$ 100,000 for those who reach the Quarterfinals. Further payments of US$ 150,000, US$ 350,000, US$ 750,000, and US$ 2 million will be awarded to the fourth, third, second, and first-place finishers, respectively.
Another key change is refereeing: VAR will be used in all matches — unlike previous editions, when video review was only available in the final rounds.
Finally, the venues have changed. Still in Argentina, two stadiums in Greater Buenos Aires will host the tournament: Estadio Florencio Sola in Banfield, with capacity for 34,900 fans, and Estadio Nuevo Francisco Urbano in Morón, which holds 32,000.
What is the format of the Women’s Copa Libertadores?
The Women’s Copa Libertadores differs from the men’s version in that there are no qualifying rounds. All 16 clubs go straight into the Group Stage. To ensure diversity, no two clubs from the same country face each other at this stage.
Each team plays three matches against their group rivals, with the top two advancing to the knockout stage — also single-elimination, covering Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the Final. Matches tied after regulation go to extra time and, if necessary, penalties.
Which teams will compete in the 2025 Women’s Copa Libertadores?
Spots were allocated according to CONMEBOL’s criteria, with two berths for the four highest-ranked federations: Paraguay, Chile, Colombia, and Brazil — the latter with three representatives for having the reigning champion. Argentina also has two teams as host nation. Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela each have one.
Here are all the participants:
