The Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF takes place at King Abdullah Sports City, an indoor hard court in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The competition begins on Wednesday, December 17th, with the final scheduled for the following Sunday, the 21st.
The event has been held since 2017, but was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and Italian Jannik Sinner, currently ranked number 1 and 2 in the world, respectively, have already won the tournament. Brazilian João Fonseca, 19, won in 2024 but suffered an injury and had to withdraw from the competition. Another athlete who is also absent is the Czech Jakub Menšík, 20.
The total prize money for the 2025 edition of the Next Gen ATP Finals is US$2.1 million, with more than US$ 500,000 going to the champion.
What is the format of the Next Gen ATP Finals 2025?
The year-end tennis competition features eight athletes, all under 20 years old. There is only the singles competition, without a doubles tournament. Unlike other ATP competitions, the Next Gen Finals is divided into two groups, like the traditional ATP Finals.
There are two groups of four athletes each, where each one faces the other three. Then, the two best-ranked players from each group go to the semifinals. The winners of each semifinal advance to the final in search of the trophy. The matches are best of five sets.
Singles
The eight tennis players are divided into a Blue Group and a Red Group. The groups were drawn, with the seeded players separated. Check out the members of each group:
Blue Group
American Learner Tien just turned 20 on December 5th. He was runner-up in 2024 and is now seeking the trophy he missed out on. Classified on November 26th, the Vietnamese-born tennis player is ranked 28th in the ATP rankings, well ahead of the other competitors.
Two Spaniards are in the Blue Group: Martín Landaluce and Rafael Jódar, both 19 years old. Landaluce is ranked 135th, with Jódar at 167th. The group also includes Norwegian Nicolai Budkov Kjær, 133rd on the list, who is also 19 years old.
Red Group
In the Red Group, the top seed is Belgian Alexander Blockx, 20 years old. He is behind Tien in the rankings, but well after the American, in 115th place. Two more 10-year-old players are in the group: Croatian Dino Prižmić, ranked 127th, and Nishesh Basavareddy, from the United States, 166th in the ATP rankings.
German Justin Engel is the youngest player in the tournament, at only 18 years old. Born in 2007, the tennis player was the last to qualify for the Next Gen Finals, securing his spot on December 10th. In the ATP ranking, he occupies the 182nd position.
